Trump Jr., who is known for sharing GOP memes on his Instagram account and calls himself "Meme Wars General," posted a photo from the 1985 film The Goonies
featuring Chunk (Jeff Cohen) and Sloth (John Matuzak) characters are shown embracing. A text reading, "Congratulations Pennsylvania!"
Along with the meme, Trump Jr. wrote: "Basically!!! Dear fact checkers this is a parody and the Goonies guy isn't really a candidate in PA even if the resemblance is supernatural."
The post was liked by more than 230,000 people, but once it was shared outside Trump Jr.'s social-media bubble, the reactions were far from enthusiastic, or amusing.
Patriot Tex, an account that researches and monitors right-wing extremism on social media, shared the post on Twitter with the words: "Don Jr. is a terrible person."
"Republicans are just so mean," wrote one. "Meaning? I think you meant to say disgustingly cruel," replied another.
