The 49ers might call up veteran safety Tashaun Gipson from the practice squad for their Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gipson, a veteran safety signed Tuesday, could suit up against Tampa Bay, providing depth for the 49ers’ secondary.

Coach Kyle Shanahan revealed Gipson is “in the mix,” especially with rookie Malik Mustapha listed as questionable.

After a solid week of practice, Gipson has proven he’s ready to step up if the 49ers need him on Sunday.

Shanahan said the decision to elevate Gipson depends on the health of other players. Mustapha’s condition will play a big role.

Gipson previously started 33 games for the 49ers, making 121 tackles and snagging six interceptions over two seasons.

Gipson, who served a six-game suspension for PED use, returned to San Francisco for a second chance this season.

With rookie Mustapha uncertain, the 49ers brought in Gipson to provide depth and experience in their secondary.

If elevated, Gipson could be key in defending against Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay offense in a critical game.

Though not expected to play extensively, Gipson’s return could be vital as the 49ers manage a banged-up roster.
